The Complete Tattoo Aftercare Guide
July 15, 2026
Your tattoo is only as good as how you care for it afterward. Proper aftercare prevents infection, preserves color, and ensures crisp lines as your skin heals.
The First 24 Hours Keep the wrap your artist applied on for 2โ4 hours (or overnight if they used a second-skin bandage). When you remove it, gently wash with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap. Pat dry โ never rub.
Days 2โ7 Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion or tattoo-specific aftercare balm 2โ3 times a day. Keep it moisturized but not soaking wet. Avoid petroleum-based products like Vaseline.
What to Avoid - Direct sunlight โ UV rays fade ink fast - Swimming pools, oceans, and hot tubs (for at least 2 weeks) - Picking or scratching peeling skin - Tight clothing rubbing on the tattoo
Week 2โ4 Your tattoo will peel โ this is normal. Continue moisturizing. The skin may look cloudy or dull โ this is the outer layer healing. The true colors will show through once fully healed (4โ6 weeks).
Long-Term Care Always apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to tattooed skin when outdoors. Moisturize regularly. Touch-ups are normal after 1โ2 years, especially for fine line or color work.
